In Corpus Christi we are very fortunate to have a beautiful school garden which is used by all classes from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. We are also extremely lucky to have a parent come and plant fruit and vegetables with the children.
The children learn about the technical side of gardening as well as taking turns, helping each other and maintaining their plants once they are sown and planted. There are many benefits for the emotional and mental health of the children. In planting, children are indirectly taught the wonders of science like the plant’s life-cycle and how human’s intervention can break or make the environment. They can have first hand experience of the miracle of life through a seed.
In time, the children learn to love their plants and appreciate the life in them. Gardening can actually help stimulate how life should be treated - it should be treated with care. Studies show that gardening can reduce stress because of its calming effect. This is applicable to any age group. More so, it stimulates all the five senses. Believe it or not, gardening can be used as therapy for children and help enhance their self-esteem.
